"Tempest no.1" is the first of my series of paintings symbolizing the battle between illness and medicine.
I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease over 5 years ago. For those of you that don't know, Crohn's is a chronic disease that mainly effects the small intestine, although it can spread throughout the rest of the body.
I came up with the name Tempest because of the metaphorical sense of a storm inside of me. The sickness is a tempest that can't be tamed (Miley Cyrus fans, anyone?). The only thing that keeps it at bay are calculated forms of medicine.
When I began these paintings, I had to find a way to represent an invisible disease with paint. I started playing around with the watercolor and the color scheme, and ended up with this organic mass that seemed menacing to me. Plus, it sorta looks like a BA storm cloud, so that's cool too.
Then I started to play around with the geometric shapes to contrast the watercolor. The lines and triangles ended up symbolizing the mathematical and calculated medicine used to combat the illness.
Throughout the painting process, I found that the act of putting a face to a disease that controls my life was somewhat theraputic. I encourage any of you with illness, or really any problem at all, to try their hand at painting. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece, but it sure will get the frustrations out. :)
I attached the other 2 paintings in the "Tempest" series, so make sure to check those out too :) Please comment below on your thoughts about the series!
